Imagination Playhouse II: Folk Theater Ensemble for 3rd-6th grade
Taught by Gina Samardge
Semester dates: Thursdays, 5pm-6pm, March 15 to June 21 (no class March 29)
Dress Rehearsal and Performance: between June 16 and June 23
A wonderful continuation through the world of theater combined with music, movement, writing, and storytelling, Imagination Playhouse Folk Theater Ensemble II nurtures the creative minds of children while teaching them theater terminology, character development, and aspects of writing plot and story. Through the use of improvisation and theater games, singing, instruments, and movement, students will bring folk tales, fairy tales, and other beautiful stories to life. In the spirit of the oral tradition of storytelling, each child has the opportunity to help make the story their own: creating their own character within the story; designing and making parts of their costumes, set pieces, and props; helping to write some of the music and lyrics; creating dances; and even adapting parts of the tale and the characters to deliver their own original version of the story. The final production is a unique theatrical experience, with students not only acting, singing and dancing, but playing percussion instruments as well. A truly one-of-a-kind production of which each child can be proud.
While the two classes, Imagination Playhouse I and II, take place at different times and focus on different age ranges (K-2nd and 3rd-6th respectively), the two groups will be working on different aspects of the same show and will perform together in the production. This will allow for more developmentally appropriate skills to be taught in the process of the show creation.
